Iran's Naval Mines and Maritime Security

The US Navy's blockade in the Persian Gulf complicates the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz due to the presence of Iran's naval mines. These mines create significant risks for maritime operations, particularly affecting oil transport and raising concerns about the safety of shipping routes. Uncertainty regarding the number and location of these mines poses a critical challenge for naval planners. Iran employs various types of naval mines, including contact mines, influence mines, and tethered mines, which collectively create a layered mine threat. Contact mines explode upon physical contact, while influence mines detonate based on a ship's magnetic, acoustic, or pressure signatures. Tethered mines remain hidden beneath the surface, making them difficult to detect and increasing the vulnerability of passing ships. The US has initiated mine countermeasures in the region, but Iran has publicly denied any involvement in laying mines or engaging in demining activities.
