America and the world face a critical juncture as the post-World War II global order deteriorates. The United States, once a beacon of democracy and free markets, now sees its leadership role challenged. Citizens express growing concerns about the effectiveness of democratic institutions and their ability to provide economic opportunities, leading to a breakdown of the social contract. In response, the Hoover Institution has launched an ambitious initiative to establish a new economic and security commons. Inspired by George Shultz, this initiative aims to foster collaboration among free societies to address shared challenges. It emphasizes the need for democracy to function effectively and for citizens to perceive its efficacy. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the initiative seeks to renew American leadership and serve as a model for democracies worldwide. The initiative will engage nearly 30 teams, including thought leaders and political figures from diverse ideological backgrounds.
