Hantavirus Vaccine Development Insights

Hantavirus is recognized as a significant pathogen on the WHO's pandemic preparedness list, underscoring the urgent need for effective vaccines. Currently, no vaccines exist for Hantavirus, prompting researchers to initiate development efforts. Two British individuals are self-isolating after potential exposure on a cruise ship, although they remain asymptomatic. The UK Health Security Agency has reported that the risk of transmission from asymptomatic carriers is very low, despite the virus's long incubation period of six to eight weeks. Health authorities are actively tracing contacts of cruise ship passengers to identify those who may have been exposed to the virus. The strain involved in the current outbreak is likely the Andi strain, which can be transmitted between individuals, complicating outbreak management. Authorities suspect that the initial infection may have originated from a couple who contracted the virus during a bird-watching trip prior to boarding the cruise. Dr. Asel Sartbaeva is leading an international initiative to develop a vaccine for Hantavirus, particularly targeting the strain responsible for recent person-to-person transmission. The vaccine development began two years ago in collaboration with teams from Texas and South Africa, focusing on creating an effective antigen and employing lipid nanoparticles.
