Hantavirus Outbreak in the Canary Islands

The regional leader of the Canary Islands has rejected a cruise ship with a hantavirus outbreak due to safety concerns and insufficient information from health authorities. The ship was initially directed to the Canary Islands after being denied entry to African ports, as it is the nearest location capable of assisting the passengers, which include several Spaniards. The World Health Organization is investigating the outbreak, which has resulted in three deaths on board. They assess that the risk of the virus spreading beyond the ship is low, despite the serious situation on board. Currently, there are seven suspected cases of hantavirus, with two confirmed fatalities involving a Dutch couple and a German citizen. Other passengers remain in serious condition, prompting strict precautionary measures for passengers and crew from 23 countries. Reports indicate that an infected individual from the same cruise is being treated in Zurich.
